Essential oils can help reduce anxious feelings.
How do oils help reduce anxious feelings and thoughts?
The answer is quite complex, but is all about the power of your nose. When you smell an aroma, the aroma molecules travel up your nose until they reach olfactory bulb. The olfactory bulb then sends this aroma molecule to five major centres in the brain, which then distributes this to the limbic system. The limbic system then sends the message encoded in the aroma throughout the body. Depending upon the aroma, and your own experience with the aroma, it will be a different message. Each therapeutic essential oil has an effect on the body at an emotional level. So if you want to create emotional states of change then you need to understand which oil to use. When you smell the aroma then you need to anchor it in your mind. eg Bergamot is going to calm me, and make me feel less anxious and more comfortable with myself. With regular exposure to the specific aroma, and the mental anchor, then your body will learn to automatically condition itself to the required response. eg lavender = destress.
Your thoughts as chemical reactions or why you need to modify and replace your anxious thoughts:
The instant a thought occurs, your hypothalamus- “the control centre” at the base of the brain- turns that thought into hundreds of neuropeptides, each associated with the dominant emotion of the corresponding thought. These neuropeptides- your thoughts!- are actual molecules being transmitted through your mind and your body. Dr Candace Pert, a renowned neuroscientist and pharmacologist….found that neuropeptides are carried through the bloodstream and transmitted from one neuron to another. Each neuropeptide interlocks with a special receptor on the receiving neuron’s membrane, just like a lock fitting into a keyhole. The amino acids in each neuropeptide are then absorbed by your cells. Your thoughts actually become a part of the cells in your body! And those cells can change depending on the nature of your thinking.
According to Dr Per’s research, the body’s cells develop more and more specialised receptors for the neuropeptides to which they are most exposed. In fact, cells will even begin to crave those neuropeptides and ask the hypothalamus to produce them. Over time your ells wind up supporting a self-fulfilling emotional prophecy all brought about by the power of thought. you get what you think about, whether you want it or not. Understanding the power of thoughts, therefore, becomes critical to permanently solving psychological and physical conditions”. p 5 Living Healthily and Happily Ever After
So the more you think anxious thoughts, the greater the risk of your body actually craving those thoughts! You have to break the cycle, and aromatherapy is a fast and powerful way of achieving this.
Please note that reactions to aroma’s are highly individual, so don’t expect it to be a “one essential oil fits all” scenario. Many oils have similar or complimentary therapeutic benefits so you may need to try several to find the oil that is the most powerful for you.
The key is identifying which particular oil you wish to work with, and then anchoring the aroma with the desired change in behavioural state. It is important that you use this oil for this specific purpose only. You brain needs to learn the required response.
I believe the best approach to anxiety looks as the body as a system. As such I designed the following protocol based on my personal experience:
