Best essential oils for dealing with stress and anxiety

What are the best essential oils for dealing with stress and anxiety, and is it ok to admit you feel anxious?

I get a lot of messages quietly from friends who don’t want anyone to know that they are feeling anxious. There seems to be a sense of shame about it, to admit that you are not coping. You know what? I can’t find many people who live in this modern day and age who haven’t found themselves in a situation at one stage or the other who haven’t felt anxious.  Change produces anxiety becuase we stress and mull over what might happen in the future.  Change happens very quickly thanks to modern technology.

Our modern lives are so busy and filled with deadlines and activities that it doesn’t take much to begin to feel stressed and a little anxious. The number of families who are now dealing with an absent parent due to FIFO (fly in fly out) roles, is incredible. Add the divorce statistics on top of this, and you’ll realise that the world is actually filled with couples and families experiencing distress from physical and emotional distance based separation. We’ve never had to deal with it on such a scale before. One person is left to stay at the “fort” and carry on as usual and the other one is permanently feeling like they are splitting themselves in two.

Couple this with our expectations of perfection, exacerbated by our friend’s seemingly perfect lives on Instagram and Facebook, and it doesn’t take long to feel like our family is the only one which is disorganised, shouty and messy, and that we should be doing a better job with the kids, our marriage and our lives.  Heck it feels stressful just writing those sentences.

We look back at previous generations and think “What am I doing wrong?”. Actually nothing. Your perception of your life as a child is different than the reality of how your parents coped at the time. One of my closest friends told me yesterday that she was given a stack of her mother’s personal letters to her family to read, by her mother, for the express purpose of understanding that she was doing nothing wrong. The reality of being human is that we all wear a mask of coping and confide in those closest to us when we need help. We don’t necessarily broadcast it to our children and the world.

Some people cope with 5pm wine.

Or a wine whilst cooking and another with dinner.

Or emotional eating.

Or sex with strangers via online dating sites.

Smoking. Doing drugs.

Shopping.

Bingeing on tv, that they don’t even really want to watch.

Never ending scrolling on Facebook

Or over exercising

Or simply retreating emotionally and distancing themselves.

What I would like to propose is that anxious feelings and stress are a normal part of life, and I would like to show you some tools that I use to help me cope. What I have taught myself is how to reach for essential oils and to supplement my diet, rather than repress my feelings or let myself get overwhelmed.  I believe that all emotions are healthy, but the key is to act on them as they arise, and make sure that we don’t get stuck in one particular emotion.

Based on my personal experiences over the past few years, I highly recommend every family examine implements a sensory routine in their lives. I believe a sensory routine is actually a recipe for sanity!

Here’s what we do in our household, and it helps! Why not try it in yours?

Here is the power combination:

  1. Create a daily sensory routine  (see images below)
  2. Use DDR Prime supplementation  The Frankincense helps reduce inflammation in your body, which is what is caused by stress. Inflammation is one of the prime causes of disease in the body. It also helps with elevating mood and making you feel grounded and calm. Since taking the DDR Prime, my immunity has been at an all time high!
  3. Carry the one essential oil you find is your “rescue remedy” with you at all times. I used bergamot when I had panic attacks. These days I am more likely to carry Balance or Peace with me in my handbag or put it on a lava bead necklace or bracelet.
  4. Investigate your gut health by participating in a gut health reboot program (we run one every three months, or you can do your own version here) or starting on the Life Long Vitality Supplements. Understand the link between your gut and your mental health.

Trust me it works! I have experienced anxiety and this is the protocol that I discovered worked best for me!

Manage your stress and anxiety through the power of a sensory routine

Spotlight on Peppermint Essential oil: For focus and nausea relief

Spotlight on Peppermint Essential Oil

Image
+ An obsession with Peppermint
I LOVE Peppermint. It’s my favourite flavour of ice-cream (choc mint please!). I love it as a biscuit (Arnott’s Mint Slice anyone?), and my childhood memories are filled with those wafer thin “Entertain-mints” I think they were called. My parents had them with coffee when they entertained clients for dinner at their house (a common feature of our weekends in the 1980’s).
So today, I thought I’d share with you a little about how peppermint essential oil is created, and more importantly what you can do with it! It’s one of the most versatile oils you can have.

Emotional benefits of Peppermint:

“Peppermint brings joy and buoyancy too the heart and soul. It invigorates body, mind and spirit and reminds individuals that life can be happy and there is nothing to fear. It lifts the individual out of their emotional trials for a short reprieve. When an individual uses Peppermint, they feel as though they’re gliding through life. It assists in staying on the surface of emotional issues, like a water skier on a lake”.
“The power of Peppermint can be felt most in times of discouragement or depression. When the individual is disheartened, they may use Peppermint to discover the joy of being alive”.   Source: Emotions & Essential oils by enlighten.
The above video show you how Peppermint essential oil is made- I find these videos fascinating.
“Spiders and ants do not like the smell of Peppermint oil… Put some in a spray bottle with water, and spray in areas you don’t want ants and insects to live inside your house.”

How to use Peppermint Essential Oil

Description

The peppermint plant is a hybrid of watermint and spearmint and was first described by Carl Linneaus in 1753. A high menthol content—like that found in the doTERRA Peppermint essential oil—distinguishes the best quality Peppermint from other products. Frequently used in toothpaste and chewing gum for oral hygiene, Peppermint also helps alleviate occasional stomach upset and promotes healthy respiratory function.* Peppermint continues to be one of the best-selling favorites among doTERRA essential oils.

Uses

  • Use a drop of Peppermint with Lemon in water for a healthy, refreshing mouth rinse.
  • Take one to two drops in a Veggie Capsule to alleviate occasional stomach upset.*
  • Add two to three drops to your favourite smoothie recipe for a refreshing twist.
  • Place one drop in palm of hand with one drop Wild Orange and one drop Frankincense and inhale for a mid-day pick-me-up.
  • Use topically for nausea and digestion issues (perfect for those facing end of life discomfort).
  • Use topically to reduce body temperature.

Directions for Use

Diffusion: Use three to four drops in the diffuser of your choice
Topical use: Apply one to two drops to desired area. Dilute with doTERRA Fractionated Coconut Oil to minimize any skin sensitivity

Cautions

Possible skin sensitivity. Keep out of reach of children. If you are pregnant, nursing, or under a doctor’s care, consult your physician. Avoid contact with eyes, inner ears, and sensitive areas.

Statements with asterisks refer to internal use. All others refer to aromatic or topical use.

Douglas Fir Oil Product Description

From Christmas trees to telephone poles to a refreshing essential oil, Douglas Fir has a wide variety of uses and benefits. This bristly conifer tree is filled with revitalizing compounds that can purify the skin and help maintain a sense of focus. When used aromatically or topically, its fresh green aroma reflects the tranquility of its native New Zealand forests, creating calm feelings and encouraging an uplifted mood. The unique chemical composition of Douglas Fir essential oil can also promote feelings of open airways and easy breathing.
Sourced from evergreen fir trees in New Zealand, Douglas Fir oil possesses a unique chemical composition that gives it a purifying, uplifting, refreshing fragrance. The Douglas Fir is often used in the Christmas tree industry because of its fresh, woody aroma reminiscent of the outdoors. Along with an inviting, refreshing scent, Douglas Fir oil can help purify the skin when applied topically.

Douglas Fir Oil Uses and Benefits

  1. Because Douglas Fir trees are often used in the Christmas tree industry, the aroma of Douglas Fir essential oil has many uses around the holidays. You can create your own holiday room spray, and invite the smells of the season into your home. Simply combine 15 drops of Frankincense, 15 drops of Grapefruit, and 30 drops of Douglas Fir into a glass spray bottle. Top with water and spray!
  2. Many people use Douglas Fir oil for skin, because it holds cleaning and purifying properties when applied topically. Due to its chemical makeup, Douglas Fir essential oil is very useful for cleaning—whether you are wiping down counters or purifying your skin when you wash your face in the morning. To enjoy the benefits of Douglas Fir oil for your skin, add a few drops of the oil to your facial moisturizer to help cleanse and purify the skin.
  3. With a combination of citrus and wood notes, Douglas Fir oil’s aroma can help promote an uplifting and positive environment. When you want to create a positive mood at home, at the office, or in a child’s bedroom, diffuse a few drops of Douglas Fir essential oil. Because of its unique chemistry, Douglas Fir oil blends well with citrus, wood, and spice essential oils. Along with creating a positive mood, diffusing Douglas Fir oil will also freshen and purify the air—an added bonus!
  4. Bring an invigorating aroma to your daily hygiene routine by adding a few drops of Douglas Fir essential oil to your favorite cleansers and soaps. Add one drop of Douglas Fir oil to your facial cleanser, and enjoy the purifying and cleansing properties this oil has to offer. Before you get in the shower, add a drop or two of Douglas Fir oil to bar soap or body wash to experience added cleansing benefits with a refreshing aroma.
  5. For a relaxing, cooling massage experience, consider combining Douglas Fir essential oil with one or two drops of Wintergreen oil. Remember, doTERRA Fractionated Coconut Oil makes a great carrier oil for massages because it is safe and high quality. Diluting oils with Fractionated Coconut Oil can help you avoid skin sensitivity, particularly when using oils that are especially potent.
  6. Want an invigorating diffuser blend that will uplift your mood and help you focus? Combine Douglas Fir, Wild Orange, and Lemon or Bergamot oil in your diffuser for a blend that will freshen the air, uplift the mood, and promote a sense of focus. Need extra help focusing? Inhale Douglas Fir oil directly from the bottle.

Fun Fact: The Douglas Fir tree gets its name from David Douglas, a famous Scottish botanist. However, the tree’s scientific name, Pseudotsuga menxiesii, was named after Archibald Menzies, one of Douglas’ rival botanists.

Plant Description
Native to North America, the coniferous Douglas Fir is a large, sturdy species with the potential to grow hundreds of feet tall. While Douglas Fir is a commonplace species in North America, it has become an invasive species in New Zealand because it keeps other native plants from growing in the surrounding soil. The second tallest conifer tree, Douglas Firs are characterized by their fir needles, which are known for their distinct aroma.

Chemistry of Douglas Fir Oil

Main Chemical Components: B-pinene, a-pinene, 3-carvene, sabinene

The chemical makeup of Douglas Fir essential oil is rather unique, because it combines beta-Pinene, a constituent found in Lemon and Lime essential oils, with monoterpenes that are commonly found in wood essential oils. This combination creates a distinct aroma similar to wood essential oils like FrankincenseJuniper Berry, and Cypress, while maintaining a citrus note. By combining these chemical components, the result is a woody, lemon-scented aroma that holds renewing and uplifting properties for the user.

Sourcing

Though the Douglas Fir is native to North America, it has become an invasive and aggressive species in New Zealand, where it threatens the surrounding landscape. Due to the climate and other environmental factors, the Douglas Fir tree grows 25 times faster in New Zealand than it can in North America, making it difficult to contain. While it is fast-spreading and uncontrollable, this tree causes more serious problems for the landscape in New Zealand. The roots of the Douglas Fir cause the ground around the trees to become barren—making it impossible for other native New Zealand plants to grow. Originally brought to New Zealand for the lumber industry, the Douglas fir is now an environmental threat to the landscape.

Using Douglas Fir trees for essential oil provides a more environmental alternative to simply cutting trees down. Through a responsible sourcing partnership, doTERRA is able to keep these trees from going to waste—making good use of an otherwise invasive species. Working closely with the New Zealand government, doTERRA has provided an environmentally friendly solution to a very serious problem by harvesting Douglas Fir trees for the use of essential oil.

Managing Emotions for parents of children

emotions parents

Kids! Hamish has been such a joy and a source of frustration. Here’s a photo of him with a Tupperware bowl on his head…

Managing emotions for parents of small children

Being a parent is an emotional minefield. Suddenly you are in charge of a human being who is growing and developing and learning how to be a human. Babies, small children and toddlers do not have the logic and reason and emotional understanding that we do. Often it is frustrating being a parent- especially when a toddler is having a melt down. You can’t reason with them, as they just don’t understand.

Apart from navigating your child’s emotional development, there is your own emotional health to consider. You sleep less, don’t have much time for yourself, or your partner, sex goes out the window, and you never have time for yourself, even on the toilet or in the shower. Your child becomes your greatest love, biggest source of joy and at the same time the trigger of your emotions, tester of patience, source of frustration and sometimes things become overwhelming.

emotions parents

This is a photograph I took of my son Hamish. He was wearing shoes for the first time and he did not like it. He threw an amazing tantrum and was hysterical. My rationale mind could not understand why he was upset. To me it was a big milestone because he was no longer ‘a baby’. To him, it felt strange and uncomfortable.

emotions parents

I swear I just left him alone for a moment…

emotions parents

Children are so curious. Everything becomes a source of fascination for them…

My friend Amelia once reminded me “put your own airbag on first Katische. The children will be fine if you are ok”.  This is a very important statement. No matter the age of your children, they will be fine and will learn to become resilient and able to cope with a wide range of emotions and situations, as long as you are ok. Children absorb the emotions that surround them. They are impacted by your emotional health, so the best thing you can do for them is to look after yourself, and understand how to navigate your own emotions.

Angus took this photo when we were at Kindermusik. I think it was the first time I saw myself through his perspective. i was sad and mad a lot at that time in my life.

I’m running a class in  Brisbane next week to specifically address the topic. We will be examining the role of essential oils in managing emotions for parents, and also children. Parents of children of all ages are welcome.  My guest presenter is Lisa Coulson, registered Psychologist, and mother of two small children.

spikenard

To move forward, you have to let something go

To move forward, let it go

let it go

I’ve been avoiding writing this post for a while, because writing things makes it real for me. But now is the time. In January I had three weeks to myself whilst my children were on a fantastic holiday with their father. This gave me a lot of time to think about 2016, and what I achieved, what gave me joy, and what caused stress in my life. It was time for me to take stock of what was working in my life, and what was essentially a fantasy or a dream that I had wanted to work, but actually no longer did. 2016 was a great year, however, I felt like a mouse stuck on a treadmill, trying to do too many things, and follow too many adventures. I worked harder and longer than ever, and made the least amount of money ever. Yes, you read that right. I went completely backwards financially in 2016. Tough decisions needed to  be made and they have.

The biggest decision for me is to acknowledge that the word “freedom” is no longer a core value. Or at least the interpretation of the word freedom. I was defining freedom in relation to freedom of travel and putting travel and the sense of freedom that it gave me as the number one focus of my life. What I learnt is that we are always free, and that freedom is a way of existing, not something that is obtained by getting on a plane.

I thought that travel writing and photography would bring me great freedom and joy, and enable and empower others to travel more and achieve the same freedom. Last year I realised that with two small children and 80% custody, that kind of freedom was not a priority. My kids love routine and stability. They love their friends and their school and are not willing to travel unless they are with friends or family. They don’t want to travel the world at the moment. On school holidays yes, but not as a primary lifestyle. I also became tired of looking for photographic opportunities and thinking primarily about blogs and what needed to be written, rather than truly enjoying the beauty of a location when I went on holidays.

I realised that photographing individuals was no longer my passion. I was great at it, and I had a fantastic time doing it, however, I was not passionate about it, and therefore attracted very few clients in an overcrowded ocean of photographers who are willing to take on a job no matter the income received.

So, I have made the call to take my travel writing and photography back a notch. I’ll still write and take photos and post them here, (you can’t take the wanderlust out of me), and I will certainly write for publications who invite me to, but it won’t be done as my main area of concentration. The original reason I started taking photographs was for mental health- to notice my dark days during my separation and to train my brain to notice shades of grey and eventually colour and then the brilliance and beauty of life. This is what I want to continue sharing with people- the beauty of life and the interesting and sometime surprising things that you notice when you pay attention. So I think this direction is returning to my core beliefs and the true essence of my “why” when taking photographs.

So what did work for me in 2016? Essential oils. I had a really fascinating year absorbing and using essential oils. I was able to help a number of people with their anxiety (including mid panic attack via the phone) and I overcame my own panic attacks. My health improved dramatically as a result of using the oils and I learned how to use the power of neuroplasticity to anchor the oils to achieve mental and emotional states that required in any situation. I realised how my personal experience with anxiety, stress and overcoming the struggles that I have been through over the past 8 years can actually truly help people going through their own struggles. It is this process of struggle, and willingness to learn and try just about anything to overcome it, that creates true transformation. It is this process and transformation that I would like to help others achieve.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has encouraged me to follow my dreams, and assure you that this is just a curve in the journey, not a dead end.  If you would like any information about how essential oils can help you through your struggles please visit my website and read through my experiences and the tools that I recommend. Please reach out, if I can be of assistance.

I have a brand spanking new Facebook page- come visit.
