There is a lot of talk out there about essential oils. But what exactly are they? What is an essential oil?
Essential oils are the volatile liquids that are distilled from plants. The essential oil comes from many parts of the plant, depending on the plant and the oil required. For example, from the humble orange of the bitter orange tree, we can obtain three types of essential oils- from the peel (Wild Orange), from the the stems and leaves (Petitgrain) and from the flowers (Neroli). Once produced, each of these essential oils has distinctly different constituents and provides different benefits. Wild Orange is uplifting and energising, whilst Petitgrain is grounding and relaxing. Neroli has a relaxing effect to the body.
Used for thousands of years by many civilisations including the Egyptians, the Arabian Empire, the Greeks and The Romans, essential oils regained popularity in the mid 19th Century thanks to the French who used the oils for both medicinal and aromatherapy benefits.
