Managing emotions for parents of small children
Being a parent is an emotional minefield. Suddenly you are in charge of a human being who is growing and developing and learning how to be a human. Babies, small children and toddlers do not have the logic and reason and emotional understanding that we do. Often it is frustrating being a parent- especially when a toddler is having a melt down. You can’t reason with them, as they just don’t understand.
Apart from navigating your child’s emotional development, there is your own emotional health to consider. You sleep less, don’t have much time for yourself, or your partner, sex goes out the window, and you never have time for yourself, even on the toilet or in the shower. Your child becomes your greatest love, biggest source of joy and at the same time the trigger of your emotions, tester of patience, source of frustration and sometimes things become overwhelming.
My friend Amelia once reminded me “put your own airbag on first Katische. The children will be fine if you are ok”. This is a very important statement. No matter the age of your children, they will be fine and will learn to become resilient and able to cope with a wide range of emotions and situations, as long as you are ok. Children absorb the emotions that surround them. They are impacted by your emotional health, so the best thing you can do for them is to look after yourself, and understand how to navigate your own emotions.
I’m running a class in Brisbane next week to specifically address the topic. We will be examining the role of essential oils in managing emotions for parents, and also children.
